Recent volcanic eruptions and earthquakes

Each day there are lots of small earthquakes that no one can feel except for the seismometer and there are also small volcanic eruptions as well.  Here is a map of all of the latest earthquakes from the past 7 days.

Tsunami and volcanic eruption in Indonesia

The tsunami hit the Mentawai islands on Monday after a 7.7 magnitude quake.

The death toll has now risen to at least 435, although the number of missing has been halved after 135 people thought dead were found safe.


The 46-minute eruption on Sunday shot dust about a mile into the air and a cloud of hot ash about half mile down Merapi's eastern and southern slopes.
In the last century, more than 1,400 have been killed by Merapi, one of the world's most active volcanos.

Typhoon in China

 
Flooding and landslides triggered by Typhoon Fanapi have now killed 54 people and left at least 42 missing in southern China.

The map above shows that Guangdong is in southern China and is where it has hit.
 
A Typhoon is the name used in east Asia for a Hurricane. It is a type of cyclone occurring in the western regions of the Pacific Ocean. A typhoon is similar to a hurricane in levels of destructiveness.

Major New Zealand Eathquake

It is a summer of natural disasters in various locations, one in Christchurch, New Zealand in the early hours of September the 4th.


A 7.1 magnitude quake struck a few miles outside the city at 4.35am

Indonesia volcano erupts

Yet another natural disaster but in Indonesia this time.  The volcano has been dormant for 400 years and now it has erupted again sending several kilometres of ash into the air.

Landslide in Guatemalan

The mud crashed onto the roads of Guatemalan as a crowd tried to dig out vehicles buried by a previous landslide.
